It said 25 years ago which would have been 72 years ago there were a scant half-doze different African violets. Today ( meaning 47 years ago ) there we an estimated 3,500.
Today year 2007 there are about 30 thousand named African violets !
The book also says In a popularity poll conducted in 1958 49 years ago :)) by the 16,000-member African Violet Society of America , these were the African violet varieties that came out on top. Whi Madonna ( Great Av plant I grew several by leaf and shared some here on DG's anyone still growing her Great Vintage who have you shared her with :))
, Ohio Bountiful, Granger Garden's, Blue Nocturne, Bud's Strike Me Pink, White Pride, Black Magic ( Another great one I've grown and shared ), White Pride Supreme, Pink Miracle, Double Pink Cloud, Ruffled Queen, T-V Vallinpink, Snow Prince, Pink Cheer, Dixie Moonbeam.
**** Sad numbers I asked Joe Burns who ahead of the FC program how many member's are there of our AVSA now in 2007 !!
He said he was not sure the exact number but it was not where the number it was in 1958 and 60's. :((
He also said " Growing African violets was a big hobby back in 1960. Most horticultural societies are experiencing a decline in membership.:
A very good reason to progate your African violets , by leaf, suckers , using any method that works and is fun for you ! Even more so important is to share !

Good Morning Nancy ! Yes it's my first Annabelle from last Feb, I took it apart pretty much sharing dozens of sets of leaves, setting leaves and sharing babies :)) Then I got a second one for my Birthday from Eunice . It has three plants in the pot. I separated and shared and shared leaves, and grew more babies I shared !
I have one baby now in a 2.50 inch pot from leaf I saved . I will share it with someone :)) as last week or so Lin sent me a new big blooming Annabelle just as pretty as can be ! She bought some I think at Wal-mart or HD I forget but it's gorous ! This one I will keep !
Can't wait to see yours ! I love bell flowers and you don't see them often

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Heres my Annabelle just coming into bloom.Oh my..LOL..it kinda pales in comparison to yours Allison.I'm almost feel bad posting my pic : ( It has alot of buds so hopefully it will fill out nice : )

Your Annabelle is beautiful ! Thanks for sharing her :))

I love african violets too. How do I go about adopting a vintage a/v? I don't think I have any vintage, although I do have Tipt, and now I have a tipt baby! I love when my leaves make babies....so exciting. How much is the membership to AVSA?

Maureen

Has anyone bought one of the Annabelle's that Hirts has on EBAY? They are less than the ones from the Selective Gardener by Optimara. I would love to get one. Very pretty!!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Maureen, click on the AVSA link that Allison posted... membership info should be easy to find!

I've been trying make a note when I figure out that I have a "vintage" AV.... but somehow, the ones that are 10 years old don't seem "vintage" to me like the ones from the 60's or even from the 80's... Then again, I'm still taken aback when a "classic rock" station starts playing songs that were popular in the 90's...

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Pam Hi ! Lin bought several Annabelles I think at Wal-Mart for $1.98 4 inch pot in full bloom awesome plants ! She sent me one :))
In Av World Jill Vintage is 20 years of older. I know I sent you some Vintage. Do you still have Royal Wasp, The Martian , they are both from the 60's :)) , Mini Minx (4056) 09/17/1980 , Electric Cowboy (5637) 02/06/1984 , Midget Lilian (E. Champion) Though not registered is Vintage most of Ethel's Av's are Vintage and the Midgets from 70's.
Now I know you have many more Vintage just a few off the top of my head :))
Species too have any ! Grow them sahe them :))

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Oh, I know I've got some vintage varieties... including the ones you mentioned. :-) I just didn't keep track at first, LOL. I didn't look it up again, sorry, don't know where I got the idea that 10 year old varieties were vintage rather than 20... I have to say, even 1986 doesn't seem "vintage" to me... I guess I want a "vintage" AV to be nearer to (or over) my own age, hahaha.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Well with African violets 25 years is Vintage but they do concider 20 years or older !
Their is a program for Vintage, rare, most wanted and you let AVSA forgot the lady's name it's on AVSa site and in journals/magazine. You let her know you are growing them !
Adopting a Vintage would not only be growing it but also sharing leaves and babies from these plants as many as you can so they don't ever get lost. There are so many Vintage Avs not to be fount :))
AVSA , First Class all the programs ran by them buildings, employees and more take lots of money and time. Joining in the membership which I know you belong Jill and many people here on DG's is so important invite your African violet friend 's :)) It's sad there are less memebers of AVSA than there were in 1958.
One person I know anytime you need help with First Class Hoe Burns is always there for us ! I was having a problem with my program. I emailed him begining of this week and let him know about this. Instead of trying to figure it out he said I sent you a new CD out yesterday . He has our address on file and does not even have to ask for it :)) I already have it got it Thursday :)) No extra charge not even shipping now that's good service. That's what AVSA is for us excellent service !
Joe always answers emails ASP. But he says emails to AVSA are slow now as a lot of employees had to be let go.
You know they had to build a new building. you can also make donation by pay pal ! The 6 times a year colorful most beautiful , informative, inspirational ,fun, African violet Journal / Magazine comes with your Avsa Membership too !
I forgot I think Joanne ?? Was mentioning that Pat Hancock may still be offereing free Buckeye leaves with every new membership !

Lindenhurst, NY

Thanks Jill. I did go to the a/v sight. 25.00 is pricey I think for a membership. If it was 15.00 I would consider it. The site is very nice and informative.

Allison, I did find the page on the vintage list but don't see anything about adopting one. Anyone know anything about that? I would love to adopt one. And I have Tipt that is on the list. Once I know for sure that my plants are pest free (maybe a few months to be sure) I can share Tipt because now I have a baby growing!

Maureen

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Maureen Membership price had been the same for years ! It's a great value and priceless. You also get the 6 a year African violet magazines which are stunning and full of great info !! Once you get one you can't wait for the new one to come out !
Some groups have a sign up for adopted a Vintage. Also AVSA has List of most wanted and Vintage plants in the magazines and you can email the lady in charge to let them know your growing it.
Basicaly you adopte as many Species and Vintage Av plants that you want ! Grow them, put down leaves to share babies and leaves with you adopted plants this way AVSA knows whos growing them and you are sharing and doing your part to keep them alive and they don't get lost.
The memberships keeps the buskdings, and worker's amd behind the scene of AVSA too. I coild not begin to list the amount of jobs for people needed to keep everything going . First Class is the greatest program but needs people to create and keep the program working and up to date . There is so much needed to keep AVSA than we could ever imagine ! Even the web sight is exspensive to operate.
When a member you get a discount on First Class and other books and things too .
Put a few dollars away each month and you will be able to give yourself a the best Christmas gift you've ever had !
Anyone who loves growing African violets will benifit and enjoy being a member of AVSA . The cost is very low compared to what you get back in return !

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I'd pay $25 just for the AVSA magazine.... Also, as Allison mentioned, if you want the First Class program, the $12 member discount on it will pay for half your membership. That's the combo that got me hooked! :-)

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Your so true Jill the magazine alone is well worth $25.00 or much more ! The work that goes into them is incrediable.
Before buying another plant, or plant stand like I was told a few years ago from a guy at local Av group do yourself a joy a favor and spend the best money you will ever spend join AVSA :))

Northwest, MO(Zone 5a)

I have to agree....the AV Magazine is a great resource tool....and the photos are fabulous.
