when started from seed they have to go through a vegetative stage first. I guess some start the flowering stage as soon 3-4' tall but one of my seedlings I started this winter didn't start the 'Y' till it was 6'.

"pinching" back set you back. Those laterals will probably still have to go through the vegative stage.

hope - he's got one brug seedling but it's planted with canna lilies!!
They both like lots of water and fertilizer but I'd say you should get that brug out of there now. Cannas I put in half-barrels have it rootbound by the end of the season plus they have multiplied. The brug just won't have much chance.
