I wanted some particular hostas and deutzias for fall planting, and this was the only reputable online seller who had both in stock. They sent it in two shipments, first a package of three Silly String hostas, which were smallish plants but with excellent root systems; I was pretty happy with them. Yesterday I received a package of three one gallon sized deutzia Cherry Blossom, which were very big healthy plants with very vigorous root systems- thrilled with them! After I initially placed my order, I read some recent reviews on this site that were not too positive, but I am absolutely satisfied with my order and will definitely order from WFF again! |
| Positive | dawncareen (1 review) | On Sep 23, 2023, dawncareen Cross River, NY wrote: I am a long time customer of White Flower Farm. This year I placed three orders in the springtime for a variety of shrubs, roses, perennials, and bulbs. I have only had good experiences with the quality of plants and packaging. I did have one hibiscus Edge of Night bareroot that did not come up and one dahlia tuber that had leafy gall. I simply reach out to their customer service and will always get a refund within a week for the damaged products. An example, in fall of 2020 I ordered 6 Strawberry Sundae hydrangeas. I was concerned about their size when they arrived as they appeared to be somewhat puny. I called WFF with my concerns and they assured me that they would honor their guarantee. I proceeded to plant the hydrangeas and give them a bit of tender care that fall. Three seasons later, I have all six bushes at maturity and producing blooms in great abundance. I wish that this review forum allowed for posting of photos so I could share my experience in picture form. Thank you for the quality of your plants. I am a very avid gardener and I have had a garden for the past 23 years that is 1.38 acres in size that is populated with a very large assortment of plants from White Flower Farm. I now await my fall order. |

| Neutral | newport28 (5 reviews) | On May 4, 2023, newport28 Newport, RI wrote: Extremely poor packing. I have been a customer of WFF for years despite very high prices and shipping costs and mixed experiences. I ordered 2 plants. The plants were laid on their sides with nothing to keep the soil in the pots. Both were covered with dirt and one had fallen out and roots completely exposed. I was home when they arrived and potted up immediately and nursed but it did not survive. I contacted the company for a replacement but it is out of stock so they promptly refunded me the price of plant. On the same day I received 2 plants from Hummingbird farm upright in box, simply but perfectly packed - Night and day difference. I hope WFF can up their game and ship plants responsibly. |

Each category shipped separately with no clear indication of when they would ship until they actually did. The potting mix was all over the box when I opened up the irises, and pretty much nothing remained around the roots, which were bone dry, plants wilted. They were wrapped in paper, but with nothing to stop the soil from spilling. I contacted WFF and they immediately issued a replacement for both. When received, they were in the same condition--I gave up. They're all planted and looking rough, but maybe they'll settle in. |

For certain specialty items, WFF is phenomenal. As a substitute for a less than great performing set of allium atropurpureums (an allium I have ordered from several different companies, and its performance has always been mediocre), I requested allium karavatiense, and it was spectacular. I put in 12, and 12 perfect specimens came up large and robustly. My Vie en Rose daffodils (pink division 1 daffodils are few and far between) have been great performers. The Festiva Maxima peonies I referred to in my earlier e-mail are in bloom, and put all the others I see in neighbor’s yards to shame. Lastly, I was seeking a red rose with certain qualities, decided on Tess of the D’Urbervilles, and found that WFF was the only supplier. I ordered six roses from three different suppliers, and all are very good, but this bare rooted specimen is the largest and most vigorous. It was also, at $19.95, the most expensive, but because of its quality I felt I received my money’s worth. Their lilies are great too. But if I were seeking a shrub, on the other hand, I would go with Forest Farm – I have eight great shrubs from them – so far. Perennials – Munchkin or Bluestem, especially since WFF is so expensive and the quality, from the feedback I am reading, is not there. On April 15th, 2020, DonnaMack added the following: I thought I was taking a bit of a chance ordering 2 President Lincoln lilacs from White Flower Farm but WOW am I impressed. I received, yesterday, 34 inch tall completedly budded out plants. I ordered them at my last home from a fabulous company that sent me tubes that grew into wonderful plants, but these were as big as those were after three years. The packaging was superb. They could not be more perfect if I had gotten them from a garden center and driven them home. The price and the shipping costs were, I thought, quite reasonable until I saw them. Now I think I got a steal! Thank you White Flower Farm. On April 15th, 2020, DonnaMack added the following: I must add something else that I just realized. As I noted above, I received containerized 34-inch plants. The plants described on the website were 12-18 inch bare-root plants for $32 each plus shipping. So I received plants that were twice as big as promised, and White Flower Farm honored the original price of $32 each plus shipping. I am blown away!! Thank you for being more than honorable WFF! Donna On April 9th, 2022, DonnaMack added the following: I was so pleased with my President Lincon lilacs last year that I ordered another. We have had very difficult weather, as in 50 one day and 20 the next, but WFF obviously watched our conditions and got my new lilac in a good window. And it is a large, completely budded-out specimen, expertly packed. I think that shrubs are a particularly good sweet spot for them. I ordered a rose that should be coming shortly - At Last. I ordered Tess of the D'Urbervilles years ago and it was outstanding. I will report when I receive it. On April 20th, 2022, DonnaMack added the following: As I noted above, I ordered another President Lincoln lilac. I received instead a product by Proven Winner, a reblooming Lilac that is six feet shorter has bad reviews and flowers that are not to my taste. I wondered whether this was a substitution. I wrote to WFF and was immediately informed that they DO NOT substitute and that this was simply an error. Today I received a gorgeous replacement. Wow! I also ordered Rose 'At Last' and received a beautiful plant with buds all over it. I often have to hold over roses but this went directly into a pot. Lastly, I ordered 3 lilium specisum 'Uchida', an old favorite that I typically ordered elsewhere. The price was unbeatable. After 20 years, I started ordering again last year from White Flower Farm and I am so pleased with their plants and their customer service. I'm back!!!!! |

I ordered multiple varieties of dahlias for my workplace & an assortment of lilies, perennials & shrubs for my homestead. They had excellent communication; received status updates on all orders. Everything was perfectly packaged in multiple boxes. Comparing prices with big box retailers, the prices were fair. The fragrant oriental lilies were a bargain ($2 ea. for 24 bulbs); beautiful quality. All sent with appropriate dormancy for planting outdoors in April in northern New England. Roses (tho’ pricey) were very high quality ($36 ea.) but they were of superior bare root quality; huge root systems & multiple bud breaks. Everything very satisfactory. Their prices are top shelf but so is their product quality; worth it! Very satisfied customer. |

The box was the size that would accommodate 8 or 10 such pots, or perhaps a small shrub in a 1-gallon pot. One little plant/pot at each of the far ends, with some semi-crumpled brown paper tossed into the gapingly empty middle. Both of these plants would have fit in a small Priority Mail box with room to spare, but instead ended up in a 24" long x 8" x 8" carton. Such overpacking no doubt contributes to WFF's overly high shipping costs as well. |

I contacted WFF about issues with the quality of plants they sent (two roses out of five arrived in horrible condition, showing signs that they had been in their carton for far too long, and UPS screwed up the delivery of a box of perennials). I found that the WWF customer service phone line is never answered, so I contacted the company through email. I got an automated email response saying they would address the issue soon. But they never did. I assume they never will. Terrible customer service equals terrible company, in my opinion. It’s a shame, because WWF was once a reliable, friendly company. It is always a red flag if you cannot talk to a company representative over the phone! |

I have also tried to call, but the voice mail refers customers, again, to the same customer service email. I have now sent five emails to White Flower Farm and have received no reply whatsoever--not even an automatic receipt of email. I am so disappointed in White Flower Farm. Their customer service used to be very good. I'll never order from them again--they sent me dead plants! |

I want to LOVE White Flower Farm (oh that catalog!), but I only like them. The positives: good selection, especially of perennials that can be hard to find elsewhere; stuff ships when they say it will and at appropriate time for planting; good performance of some plants. The negatives: high prices; small plant sizes; and occasional poor plant performance. So I have kind of figured out over the years what I can and can't buy from them. I won't do shrubs anymore after I was sent a lilac twig that died and I won't do daylilies as places that specialize in these flowers are superior for that. I do turn to WFF for perennials I can't find elsewhere, just knowing the cost will be high, the plants will be small, and my husband will say, "You spent $200 for THAT!" But they are plants and will grow. The iris I planted from WFF last year are gorgeous--the stars of my garden right now. The perennials I planted earlier this spring were small but are doing well. My bare root roses are thriving. So I'd say order from WFF but just adjust your expectations, especially for cost, accordingly. |
