| Negative | JVachon (1 review) | On Nov 28, 2022, JVachon wrote: I wanted to plant several fruit trees this year but since they were out of stock and appeared to be in stock for 2023, I pre-ordered, pre-paid and received confirmation for my trees. I ordered 8 Grade #5 fruit trees on March 16, 2022. The response I received was: “Thank you! Your order is reserved. We ship in March and April depending on your climate. We will send you several shipping notifications as the time draws near. You may respond to those notifications if there is a specific time that you would like to receive...” Nowhere in the response nor at the time of ordering did I get the impression that the trees as ordered were not going to be met. Although the email said “reserved” my understanding of that word is that it means to keep or set apart/aside for the future. |
| Positive | bk2 (11 reviews) | On Jul 8, 2022, bk2 wrote: I ordered 11 bare root trees from several companies this spring. From Cummins I ordered 2, a peach and an apple. Of the 11 trees I ordered, four grew in a manner I would describe as perfect, in that they responded beautifully to an initial hard prune after planting, and quickly formed nice scaffolds. Of those four, two were from cummins. So far, 100% of my product from cummins has been as good as I could hope for. They are easy to buy from, good website. They also were the first trees to arrive. So I highly recommend. |

When I unwrapped the dormant bareroots in April 2022, I kept saying over and over, "They look so good!" The scion wood was stout and straight (even despite having bought some of the lower grade sizes), and the rootstocks they were grafted onto were substantial with well-developed tap roots. They soon developed healthy new, white feeder roots, too. They were all planted out and hard pruned in April/May, and they have all since put on great growth. It takes planning and patience, but ordering from Cummins was a great experience because of the quality of stock I received, combined with the ability to order the scion/rootstock combos that I wanted. |

It was my first time ordering from them. When the root stock didn't arrived at the time that I expected it to, I emailed the company. They responded the next day to let me know that my order was on the way. It arrived in a reasonable amount of time (especially considering the fact that the half of the country is shut down due to COVID1-19). The root stock looked healthy and it was well packaged. I am happy with what I got and with their customer service. I would order from them again. |

| Positive | happyroots (4 reviews) | On Apr 24, 2018, happyroots Averill Park, NY wrote: Posted on January 15, 2018, updated April 25, 2018 On September 5th, 2017, happyroots added the following: Updated August 2017: Cummins Nursery made good on their mistake and I am satisfied with the resolution. The refund was very late in arriving and I was told the reason was that a set of refund checks were lost in the mail. They went above their responsibility and will also send me the plum tree I did not get in the spring of 2018. I will keep my rating as it was when I posted the original review; however, I will consider ordering from them again in the future. My recommendation is that if they need to pad-up plants from another nursery to make their orders, that they have an iron-clad agreement. No nursery in the south can be trusted to meet orders for northern growers because they always fill southern orders first and if there are any plants left, then they fill Northern orders. Somebody always gets shorted in the North. This year it was them, and hence, their customers. A vendor is only as reliable as the least reliable vendor in the chain. I wish them the best in the future. On January 15th, 2018, happyroots changed the rating from negative to positive and added the following: Updated 1/15/2018: Updated to positive because the company is doing their best to make good on a mistake and then some. I ordered another tree from them recently because they bent over backwards to resolve my issue. In-general, their trees are good. No nursery is perfect. Some plants simply die in storage, but look alive. There isn't a nursery I have ordered from where that has not happened. A good way to tell is if the tree begins to leaf out a bit and then stops abruptly. Trees will leaf out from the moisture in the trunk, even if the roots are dead. Most of their trees live, but statistics is always there and I have had a couple not make it. That percentage is low. In regards to size, they list different caliper sizes to buy. If you want a bigger tree, then order a bigger tree. A few years ago I planted two peach trees from a local nursery where they buy from wholesalers. The trees were large, but there were barely any roots in the ball. (I always break the balls open to see what I "really" bought.) None of them are dug up with their native soil. In order to keep the trees alive, I had to cut all of the side branches off and then hold my breath. They did make it, surprisingly. Fearing that they would not make it through the winter, I ordered a peach tree from Cummings for the next Spring. Their tree was 1/4 the size of the ones I bought from the local nursery, who re-sold wholesale trees like Lowes and Home Depot. In 2017 all three trees had peaches for their first time. The tree from Cummins is also larger than the other two now. To be fair, I probably purchased the peach tree from Cummins with rootstock that was not dwarf. The other two have unknown rootstock. The moral to the story is that initial tree size is not critical. The roots are. If you get a bad one then follow up with that company and be sure that you are taken care of. In the long run it will help their business if they do. Happy planting! On April 24th, 2018, happyroots added the following: Updated 4/24/2018: I ordered two more trees this year and all arrived in really great shape. The company also sent me the Toka (Bubble Gum Plum) I had ordered last year when they experienced an inventory problem with their vendor. Cummins Nursery really went the extra distance to be sure I was taken care of and was a happy customer. That is rare these days. To the guy with the check problem; I ran into a similar experience with a grape vine vendor two years ago because that was their only means of accepting payments. Checks are problematic. I pay for my orders at Cummins Nursery using the link on Cummins' website where I can pay through PayPal using a credit card. It works much better and if you order an extra tree late, like I did recently, they can get your tree out the door quickly that way. I ordered a tree on a Friday and had it in the ground on Tuesday! |

Their customer service was ample and tress good-sized, but for years now I've run into the same problem where they say I did not pay for an order but I have made it a habit to send a check in at the same time of placing an order. So I am discontinuing ordering from them since I have mistrust in the accounting. As nice as the variety of choices was, I will be relying on local nurseries from now on as I can be sure that I walk out with everything I paid for right there and then instead of playing games with recordkeeping. I ordered in 2016 and had a very positive experience with Cummins which I posted as a positive review. In the Fall of 2016 I ordered 3 trees from them, 2 cherry's and 1 apple tree. I get an e-mail today, February 22nd saying due to an inventory error my cherry trees are unavailable. When I ordered there inventory show 90 plus trees available for each variety. So now it is the end of February, no cherry trees and unlikely to get the varieties/root stock I want for 2017 from another vendor. I find it hard to believe that they hand an inventory error on both varieties and it took 4 months to catch .... No offer to make this right in any way. I will not deal with them again. On February 27th, 2017, eusriso changed the rating from negative to neutral and added the following: So after posting my last update, I was contacted by Steve Cummins with an explanation on my "inventory error". Steve explained that they had crop failure and had a commitment from another nursery to source the trees. The other nursery backed out of there commitment thus no trees. I am still without trees but will accept there explanation and move on. Rating changed to neutral. |

I posted my original (negative) review late yesterday night. They telephoned me this morning after they read my email to them. After apologizing for their new inventory control system, which was not able to give them (and me) sufficient warning about the lack of inventory for my order, they issued me a larger (volume) discount than I was entitled to. That was very nice of them and I know that they are sorry for the problem caused by their short notice regarding the deficit in my order (the remainder of which is being delivered today). |

The trees came in excellent condition, huge roots and large caliper. I will be ordering more trees this year; in fact, I have some on "hold" right now until I complete my order. I don't know what I want to order completely yet. My husband was impressed to with the stock and we order a lot of trees and he's not easy to impress. So their website isn't spectacular, who cares, but their trees definitely are! |

Three of the five trees did not live through the first year; none of the trees produced any new branches during the first season. Of the two that overlived the season, one has about four new sprouts at the very base of the tree; the other shows more branch sprouts but with large bare gaps along the stem. So, one of the five will probably make a decent tree with considerable luck in inducing some more buds to sprout branches; a second one is starting over close to a benchgraft stage instead of a three-year old tree; three are dead. I purchased replacement trees from MAPLE VALLEY ORCHARDS (WI) and have had just the opposite experience: straight grafts, straight stems, lots of live buds over length of stem (and sprouting after two weeks in the ground), and super customer relations. I have ordered other apple varieties from BIG HORSE CREEK FARMig Horse Creek Farm for fall delivery and if their trees match their customer relations and their website depictions, I should be able to report similarly good results next spring On May 1st, 2012, augenwink added the following: Excuse the keyboard glitch. I needed only to erase the duplicate name of second nursery and to indicate it was in NC before the computer misinterpreted a keystroke as "finished". |

| Positive | gourdobean (14 reviews) | On Feb 2, 2012, gourdobean Minden, NV (Zone 5a) wrote: I ordered and planted 21 apple, plum, cherry and apricot trees last spring. The bare root trees were beautiful with substantial root systems that gave us a workout getting the holes large enough. I have no idea how they managed to get all those roots in the package without breaking a one. The trees grew without pause and show every promise of healthy growth this spring. Don't be afraid to ask questions and take your time making your order. If I had to do again I would order smaller unbranched stock so I could have more control over shaping. In my lifetime of gardening I have never been more pleased with a nursery. Now all that's needed is cooperation from our fickle Nevada weather and we just might get a piece of fruit...eventually. |

A business looking after MY interests by NOT wanting to sell me something they felt I might not be happy with is refreshing, encouraging, and says a lot about those people and their business. Honored Cornell professor, a full life of teaching, research and grower experience and--best of all--willing to share that wealth of knowledge with his customers. I've developed a sizeable rare and heirloom fruit orchard and vineyard behind my California home and he's been a great help over the years. He's kept me from making some big mistakes, helped solved some pathogenic problems I had, and suggested some wonderful heirloom apple and pear varieties that I wasn't aware of. And we love the Cornell "Geneva" rootstocks which are almost impossible to find anywhere but Cummins (in the mail order world at least). The G11's and G16's are working beautifully for us. Can't speak about Cummins stone fruits (shipping to California prohibited) but the selection and quality of Cummins pome fruits are exceptional. And they will, no doubt, stay that way, because Cummins is a family business. |
