When I called to inquire about the order their customer service was friendly and courteous and genuinely seemed to care. So far, all I've planted have been fresh and vigorous. I love all the unique varieties they have and also like their emphasis on organic production. Their resealable seed packets are a plus, too. I look forward to doing business with Johnny's in the future. |
| Positive | ewaters (7 reviews) | On Mar 7, 2003, ewaters wrote: I ordered some echinacea seed from Johnny's and the very day the order arrived I received an offer of a $5.00 discount on my first order which I had already made. I emailed Johnny's to see if they would honor the $5.00 offer for the order that I had already made. They emailed me back promply saying that they would gladly refund me $5.00 on my order. Five dollars may not seem like a lot of money but the fact that they had the courtesy to respond to me and not brush me off was priceless. Johnny's is also the only company that I have seen so far that warns that to get most echinacea seeds to germinate they must be strafied. I then had to find out what stratified seeds were. In fact on further reading in their catalog they explain that stratification is the process of storing seeds at low temperatures in the refrigerator for about 30 days prior to planting. This process helps to break the dormancy inherent with echinacea seed. All this time I couldn't figure out why I could never get those seed to germinate. |

| Positive | Griffitha (2 reviews) | On Feb 26, 2003, Griffitha wrote: The seeds were packaged nice. The instructions on planting was printed on 8 1/2 by 11 which made it easier to read. The prices was little higher than Pinetree Gardens but I thought they gave you more seeds with Johnny's. |
| Positive | magic8ball (5 reviews) | On Feb 23, 2003, magic8ball wrote: The seeds I ordered arrived quickly. They did have a warning listed on the jalapeno seed package that the color would be paler than usual. I was impressed that they would inform the buyer of this. My faxed order was accidentally duplicated, which turned out not to be a problem. The order form is on legal size paper which doesn't fax properly sometimes. I would recommend phone or online ordering instead. They credited my account the next billing period, and all customer service reps were friendly and helpful. I have only planted the winter thyme seeds so far but they have already sprouted! I can't wait to see how the tomatoes and peppers do. Good experience so far! On February 23rd, 2003, magic8ball added the following: I forgot to mention that the company told me to keep the duplicated seed order instead of sending it back to them. I still got credited. Now that's good service. |

| Positive | ddunbar (2 reviews) | On Feb 10, 2003, ddunbar wrote: I ordered over $300 of seeds from Johnny's. When my order arrived, they said I owed them more money. I checked my invoice and saw they had charged me $11.75 for something that was supposed to be $4.50. I called customer service. Indeed there had been a price increase. She apologized and suggested I send it back and request a refund on shipping. I did so. A week later, I got an envelope from them. It had MY ORIGINAL SEEDS in it, a letter of apology and a note stating they were sending me a check for $15.06; the cost of shipping for my seed order plus my refund. Now that's great customer service!!!!!! |
| Positive | Sosa (11 reviews) | On Jan 30, 2003, Sosa wrote: Ordered a number of vegtable and herb seeds, they arrived in one week in good condition. Last years seeds all germinated well. My garlic was great! Very good catalog, selection, service, and growing info. |

| Positive | ChicagoGardener (5 reviews) | On Jan 27, 2003, ChicagoGardener Evanston, IL wrote: This is a terrific company. Quality of their seeds is outstanding -- the germination rates I have had with with their seeds have been very high. Prices tend to be very competitive. Customer service is excellent -- not only can you get through, but they are friendly and responsive. The cultural information in the catalog is quite excellent and more extensive than for most catalogs. It is also a big plus that they are independent, and not part of one of the substantial corporate consolidation throughout the industry. Johnny's folksy email letter is down to earth and informative. |

Sadly, I strayed to another few companies. The transactions I experienced with these other companies left me running back to Johnny's with open arms. When ordering on the telephone, they tell you right then if something is sold out, rather than waiting until you receive the order to discover such as I did with the unmentionables. I would much rather select an alternate item than to shop elsewhere and wait for backorders. My apologies, Johnny's, you're back at the top of my list! On March 9th, 2007, WUVIE added the following: While I am shocked and surprised at the news that Johnny's has been affected by a scoundrel stealing website information, I do not feel it is necessary to post a negative. The Watchdog is here for our experiences, good and bad. Unless our credit was ruined by the theft Johnny's experienced, I fail to see where our rating should be negative. It's like saying "You could have wrecked the car." Could have. But didn't. Yes, they were infiltrated in some way, but unless we were affected by such, it is not fair to post negative feedback for this company. Every time we place an order on the internet we are taking a chance with a company. I've ordered from Johnny's numerous times and have yet to have one bad thing to say about their speed, service, quality of seed sold. With regard to the comments about high prices, the prices are listed with the items. If the cost is too high, why buy? It isn't like we are surprised with a total, we are given the total when ordering. Where is the shock when the price tags are clearly supplied beforehand? A happy Johnny's customer who was one of the credit card folks. |

Everything is exactly as advertised, with great selection. But, as a northern gardener, the thing I like best is that they prominently display days to maturity. About 90% of the seeds I order from other catalogs have problems reaching maturity in my short season. I never have to guess about this when I order from Johnny's. |

Great service, good, if occasionally ideosyncratic, selection, and prices that are reasonable for what you get. I'd also advise getting on their electronic mailing list for their newsletter, which contains very useful information. I applaud their work in developing new varieties and their emphasis on organic seed and sustainable growing practices. Simply put, the best. |

| Positive | HGoM (1 review) | On Sep 7, 2002, HGoM wrote: I recently ordered several items from Johnny's -- just as I've done for years. My order arrived three days later! I have never (never!) had a problem with either their seeds...or the cheerful, knowlegeable, and personal service. When I call I get a real person right away, without having to listen to some aggravating recording like "If you want something, press 12"! And, yes, they really do process my orders the very same day I call...and, because I always call before noon their time, they pack it up and send it all out that afternoon. That's got to be tops in the seed industry! I can't wait to get their new catalog this winter to see all the new stuff they'll be adding (like they do every year). |

You order a particular variety, and that is just what you get. No substitutes. No argument. And no waste of time getting what you ordered. I cannot believe that they always put what I order into a box and mail it out that very afternoon!!! And they have so many old fashioned varieties and really neat stuff. And I really like the fact that most of their seeds are organic and none of them are genetically messed around with. I think I will make my next order at their website. So far I have just been there to get instructions on how to grow their seeds but if their website ordering is as good as their phone ordering, that is how I will order in the future because I can go there any time of the day or night. Johnnys is absolute tops in my book and I would recommend them to anyone!!! They get 5 stars from this old farm gal! |
| Positive | kellysea (1 review) | On Jul 1, 2002, kellysea wrote: Oh so love their wide selection of organic seeds and I can't think of one other company today that when you call, you speak immediately with a real, live person, and are not bombarded with a dizzying array of automated options. For me, their squash selection is among the best, but they do everything right, as is evident from others on this page. They are somewhat expensive, but then again, they do much of the plant breeding stuff themselves. R&D is expensive. |

I just sent my order out last Monday, and it got here today, a week and three days later--Thursday. Not too bad of a waiting time, either, for a Michigan to Maine trip in the mail. Everything arrived in great condition. The germination instructions on the backs of the seed pkts. are detailed enough, too, so you know exactly what to do for good results. Another thing is that their seed pkts. are re-sealable. Their prices are very good for what you get. Anybody considering to order from Jonny's should really give them a try. |
