The bulbs I received were consistently small, soft, and in several cases outright mushy, a clear sign of poor storage, weak culling standards, or both. In our climate, bulbs must survive freeze thaw cycles, cold winter soil, and then push hard in early spring and this kind of stock simply does not perform. Several bulbs failed to emerge at all. Oothers produced weak, anemic growth that collapsed after a late frost. A healthy bulb should be firm, heavy for its size, and stable in the hand and these were none of those things!! Descriptions on the site also gloss over real-world hardiness concerns, offering vague guidance that ignores how unforgiving New jersey soil and weather can be. I should not have to pre-soak, fungicide dip, or baby bulbs just to give them a fighting chance. That’s not gardening .... that’s damage control. For a company selling to northern gardeners, sending out underdeveloped, questionable stock is unacceptable. What arrived at my door felt rushed, careless, and frankly not ready for planting. I’ve grown thousands of bulbs over decades, and this was the kind of material that sets a garden back a full season.... or worse. Serious gardeners deserve better. Poor quality like this isnt a fluke, its a pattern, and it shows. The quality of the bulbs in my 2024 and 2025 orders was terrible and I received moldy and mushy bulbs and some dried up bulbs. In 2025, I complained immediately about several bags of the bulbs I received and they did send replacements. However, the replacements were also moldy and mushy or dried up! Plus one of the replacements was the wrong variety. It's very disappointing because the first few years I ordered from them the quality was great. I will also note that Costco also offers bulbs from Longfield Gardens in their stores. The bulbs I have purchased in store have always been great but that doesn't really work for me since I want specific varieties. Still, I gave them the benefit of the doubt. I prep my beds meticulously: well-draining soil, organic compost, and a balanced fertilizer. I am in zone 5 and followed the planting depth and spacing recommendations to the letter. Come spring, only a handful of spindly, pale green shoots emerged. Out of the 50 or so bulbs I was able to salvage, 6 sprouted, and only 2 actually bloomed—wilted flowers that looked more like they were auditioning for a Halloween decoration. They were shipped in late September. The size and condition of the Victoria Falls Iris was very disappointing. They were very small and dried up. I have doubts that they will survive but planted them anyway. The Easter Candy rhizomes were literally 3 times as large and much more healthy. I would have much preferred that Longfield reach out to me to ask for my preferences if the crop of Victoria Falls was poor (which it appears was the case). Simply shipping some very small and shriveled up rhizomes sends the message that they hope I don't care and will not complain. I won't use this company again. | Negative | lisaaj (22 reviews) | On Aug 13, 2024, lisaaj Columbus, OH wrote: I have ordered from Longfield Gardens for the past three years, primarily dahlia tubers. Some of the dahlia tubers were correct and grew and bloomed well. However, every single order has had at least a few duds, as well as at least a couple of dahlias that bloomed and proved the wrong tubers had been sent. I think three years is a fair trial, and that since every single order has had mislabeled tubers, it’s time to seek out a better source. The final straw this year was ordering oriental lily bulbs “Salmon Star” and getting some hot pink variety instead. They need to work on their accuracy. |

I’ve been very happy with the tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, muscari, crocus and alliums. All have been healthy and true to variety. The only bad luck I had was with dahlia tubers I ordered online. The dahlias I bought in the store were fine. I requested a replacement for the dahlias ordered online and they were very good about it. I will say this about the shipping - almost all shipments have been timely and well-packaged. My most recent order is from the 40% off end of season sale with free shipping and there have been significant delays with the carrier. The bulbs were an extremely good deal, and one can’t argue with free shipping. Just be aware it could take a long time to get your order. |

I ordered from them because they have a particular dahlia variety that I want. In 2021 the dahlia tubers where shipped very poorly packaged. They arrived very broken. About half were not usable. They did offer a credit for the damaged items. I thought this might be a one-off so I ordered dahlias again this year. Again, dahlia tubers arrived broken in many pieces, most not usable. I won't bother to ask them for a credit, because I don't want to continue to be a customer. In fairness, I also received some astilbe and a peony that seem to be fine. It's a big deal though that they can't be bothered to properly package their dahlia tubers two seasons in a row. I recommend you shop elsewhere. |

I ordered a colocasia, a package of nine Pablo dahlias, and a package of three Labyrinth Dahlias. The order was shipped in a timely fashion. The colocasia bulb was much smaller than advertised and also looked dried out. I emailed requesting that they send another, but apparently they were sold out and they promptly refunded my money for the bulb. (I did plant the bulb and it did not grow.) All of the dahlia tubers looked beat up and had broken side tubers, but the main necks were intact so I planted them. Of the three Labyrinth dahlias, only one grew. Of the nine Pablo dahlias, eight grew. Of those eight, two came up very puny and took a long time to mature, but eventually did. All were true to name. |

They are 'local' to me in south jersey, have prices that beat competitors (looking at you breck's) at their retail prices not to mention sales. Very nice customer service for one incident of mushy/moldy bulbs which I received a replacement for but did have to pay shipping. One incident of mislabelled hosta which I didn't realize until months later when it had grown somewhat, did not ask for return as it wasn't a big deal. Otherwise bulb quality has been great. Medium sized but still neat selection, great collection of tropicals. strongly recommend. |

This year I ordered a different variety with much worse results. 1. The package was supposed to contain 3 plants, but there were only two there, plus a couple loose tubers. 2. Although the tubers themselves looked healthy, their necks, where they joined the stem, were very dry and frayed looking. 3. I planted the 2 Dahlias but only one came up (and appears to be doing well). I have not contacted them about any refund. I am unlikely to order from them again. Unfortunately, only three of the 15 tubers were possibly viable. The tubers were a mass of tiny, baby finger like appendages with broken necks. I called them right away and they said they would send me new tubers, but I have not received them yet. Since I start my dahlias early in pots, getting them soon is important. I will consider changing my rating if and when I get some decent tubers. I have read on my Facebook dahlia page that someone else ran into this same problem and they did get new, slightly better tubers. I am so happy I found them. The photos on their site are very accurate to the plants, the bulbs are top quality and larger than those I've ordered from so-called "Dutch" companies, and highly reliable to bloom. But for me, the one thing that sets LG apart is the service. The shipping is lightning fast - granted, I am in NY, and they are in NJ - but I have found that they don't waste a minute processing your order and getting it shipped. Out of a number of successful orders...incredible tulips, hyacinths, allium, clematis...I had one issue with a fair quantity of hardy pink geranium that didn't live through the first season, even though they were planted with other hardy geranium that have performed perfectly year over year. However, I waited to see if they would come back this year, but they did not. I had saved my online receipt, but it had been slightly over a year when I contacted them to ask about what options I might have. The customer service could not have been better. Stellar, in fact. I explained what happened and they promptly issued me a full refund. Unquestionably one of the best bulb companies out there, and in my 40 years of gardening, that's saying something. |

It shipped 2 days after when they said it would, but given that I had ordered a full month prior to that, I hardly noticed. It arrived at my doorstep in a very well-packaged box, and all the bulbs were large, extremely healthy, fresh, bursting with life. You know how most bulbs look like something dried up and dead, and we gardeners have to really *hope* that something inside will "wake up"? These bulbs came out of the box looking very much alive. The roots on the dense and heavy lily bulbs were full, white, and hydrated, for example. When's the last time you saw roots like that on a bulb?!? I am still very much a Longfield (and Costco) fan. |
