By far, ARE was the best supplier, the roses came as noted, in EXCELLENT health and have thrived in unquestionable fashion. I will continue to buy from this company in the future and recommend it to anyone interesed in antique roses!

Purchased two roses which were shipped promptly in their incomparable packaging. They had a fair bit of blackspot, and what looked like some mildew. One was smaller than the other, and more infected. Looked like it might remain the runt. They warned on their site that blackspot could develop in shipping. Still I was a bit skeptical - after all, this variety wasn't supposed to be bothered by blackspot at all, one of the reasons I'd chosen it!

With removal of diseased leaves and a week in the open air and sun both were putting on new foliage at a rapid clip. 10 days after arrival the larger one had bloomed! (5 days in the ground).
Now, a month or so along, they've both got lots of buds and have leafed out into lovely mounded shrubs. A few aphids have visited, but not a sign of any further blackspot.

In other words, they shipped very sound strong plants with established root systems, that can take the stress of shipping and rebound to their real glory quickly.

Will definitely order again -- both for their roses, and for their packing inserts, which make fine cat tunnels. A free bonus that they don't mention!

Ordered several ROSES from this company in March and ROSES arrived here in Kingston, NH from Texas the week I had asked for them, in perfect condition. They are by far the largest, healthiest of all the companies I had dealth with this year. This is my first year growing roses so I have many different types of roses in different sizes and conditions!, but I trusted the feed back of Daves Garden members. I'm not dissapointed. UPS has a track record of hurling the boxes down ramps at lightning speed so you wonder what you going to get if a mishap occurs but they were packaged by a company that cares about your satisfaction. There are other rose companies that are excellent as well, but this company so far has impressed me most. I will order from them next year and tell my friends and associates abouth this great company.

Because of all the positive feedback about this company I placed an order way back in October for spring delivery and spent the long winter months daydreaming of the day I would get my roses. So when the UPS truck pulled into my driveway yesterday I was like a kid at Christmas! I had no fears, because I trusted everyone's feedback here, and I was not disappointed! Its a long way from Texas to New Hampshire, but the roses looked remarkably good for being in boxes for a week...all bushy, green and healthy. The packaging was terrific, and the soil was still moist. By the way, I placed another order with them prior to receiving this order, so I should be getting more roses soon! This is a first-rate company, so deserving of the many positive ratings it has received....you can order from them with complete confidence as I did!

On July 1st, 2005, celestialrose added the following:

I would like to put in another good word for this excellent company because I am so pleased and happy with the roses I received from them! Immediately after receiving my roses in May, the weather turned unseasonably cold and rainy...seemed as though the entire month it rained, and the temps. were below normal. I worried about these roses from Texas, since they had just been shipped from where it is warm and dry. For the whole month, they either just sulked or lost a good deal of their leaves, and I was getting discouraged...then suddenly, we got some sunshine and they not only started growing new leaves by leaps and bounds, but right now ALL of them are blooming their heads off, and have been completely disease-free....I have never had to spray. This goes to show that this company grows and sends out the most vigorous, healthiest and most well-established ownroots anywhere. The only complaint I have is that they don't carry very many of the roses I can grow in zone 4.....otherwise, I would order from them exclusively! They are the best!
On June 4th, 2006, celestialrose added the following:

Here it is, one year later, and my experience with the Antique Rose Emporium is still absolutely flawless. I LOVE this company! I ordered 10 more roses from ARE this year....unfortunately the weather out there in Texas was terribly HOT, so that by the time the roses arrived here in New Hampshire after being in boxes for a week, most had begun to defoliate and didn't look too chipper. Even though its a little bit disappointing when the leaves all fall off, I wasn't concerned because these roses have the best root systems of any roses I have ever received, and their plants are extremely healthy. I simply removed what few leaves remained on the plant that looked sickly, and within a few days the bushes starting pushing out new leaf buds. They are already fully leafed out and growing quickly, every single one of them. I also wanted to mention that all of my roses from ARE that I purchased last spring sailed through my zone 4 winter with no dieback. (I winter-protect somewhat, but they were so big and strong going into winter that they had no problems.) I don't know if I should publicly mention this, but I just wanted to share this tidbit.....I wrote a thankyou note to ARE to thank them for such quality roses, and in my letter I asked about their Texas Pioneer Roses because I was curious if they would do okay here in N.H., explaining that I was a little hesitant to invest in them if they weren't going to make it through my winters, but I was intrigued by them. I just wanted to know if they had any feedback from cold-zoners on these. Well, to my surprise & delight I received a box of 2 Texas Pioneer roses, with their compliments, for me to try out for myself!! Obviously, I will continue to order from ARE until they run out of roses that are hardy here!!!

I had a great first experience with ARE! I ordered 13 roses and asked to get one per a special offer I'd received in a catalog and they not only honored it online, they sent 2 free "Old Blush" roses. They sent an email on Tuesday the roses shipped and I received them (very well packaged) on Wednesday. All looked extremely healthy = better than many I would have gotten locally. The shipping was a little pricey but it was obvious why - as they were packaged very well and were, well after-all heavy! The roses were all bright green, no broken branced or wilted leaves. I've gotten 12 planted and 3 more to go, everything looks A-OK, I am a ver happy customer! Great selection!

A lot of the local nursery men and Radio personalities recommend this store even though they are not very close to my area which is Dallas. They even have written books on Antique roses which I had bought even before I realized they sold online as well as wrote books, they truly are experts on Antique roses!

I live in Fredericksburg. The first time I went to the ARE was in1999. Someone had given me a rose and I needed to know what it was. I drove to San Antonio (1 1/2 hours) with my rose. They weren't really sure what it was, but they spent quite a lot of time on the question as well as talking to me about the roses they sell. I was very to new to gardening and especially to antique roses, but I was hooked. I have been back many times, making the long trip to SA solely to visit their gardens. The SA nursery isn't as big as the one in Brenham, but it's catching up quick. I have also made the trip to the Brenham nursery, just to visit the gardens there. They also have a wonderful series of seminars in the spring. They are taught by people who really know their stuff.

I ordered 6 climbing roses from ARE. They delivered when they said they would and sent the email notification as promised. I found their online service very helpful. Their rep spent the amount of time needed to understand what I was looking for and suggested 3 different roses that would fit my needs. The roses were shipped better than expected. Those things were NOT going to bounce around in the box!!! One bush even had a rose. Good root system, no broken or dead branches. They didn't even wilt after I planted them. The planting instructions were included and very helpful. Would order from them again. Jamie

I have done business with the Antique Rose Emporium several times (in person, not by shipping) and it has always been a pleasure. (I live in Houston and if you are able to drive to Brenham it is worth the trip!) Healthy roses -- well rooted, healthy, different sized containers for different budgets -- and they have a knowledgable staff.

The variety of antique roses and other perennials is outstanding. Another rewarding part of visiting in person is walking around and getting garden ideas. The Antique Rose Emporium is not only a great nursery, it is also an inspiring garden!

I'd ordered from Antique Rose Emporium many years ago (about 15 years ago), and was pleased with the quality of plants I received. That they later died was my fault--I was pushing the limits of zone survivability and we had a hard winter. I just placed another order because they offered three roses I craved, AND a friend who is absolutely obsessed with roses strongly recommended their products. I'll report back once the plants arrive in late september/early october.

On October 19th, 2004, nevadagdn added the following:

I received my roses, and they are in the condition one would expect after a week in UPS transit. They are healthy, a bit banged up (What DO they do with packages at UPS? maybe I don't want to know...), and a bit stressed from no light and no water for that week, but I can tell they started their journey in good condition. The packaging was as good as it gets--NOTHING is UPS-proof. Only a little soil was spilled, and only a few very small twigs at the tips of the bushes were broken off. I'd order again, or will order again if I can find more room for more roses.
On October 25th, 2004, nevadagdn added the following:

In the course of planting my roses, I noticed that the root balls on the roses were a bit smaller than I would have expected for 2-gallon plants. Not itty bitty, but not as large as I might have liked.

For someone like me who has just started learning about roses, the Antique Rose Emporium was a joy to do business with. My selections are gorgeous and blooming vigorously. They arrived on time and in excellent condition. I'll be making room for more roses next year.

I guess their stellar rating speaks for itself, but I just wanted to add myself to Antique Rose Emporium's long list of happy customers. I placed my first order with them last year for roses for fall planting. Their 2-gallon potted roses are really probably the finest specimens you can get anywhere. ARE's roses are distinguised, because they are mature, robust, own-root plants. There are ample woody canes and the root systems are full and substantial. These plants are definitely preferable to the own-root roses you can get anywhere else, because they will establish much quicker. On top of all this, the plants I received were all very healthy upon arrival.
Of all the roses in my yard, the ones from ARE have been the most vigorous this spring and are growing at an extraordinary rate compared to the rest. They already look like established plants! The bushiest and healthiest rose in my yard comes from ARE. It is 'Mozart,' a hybrid musk! It is such a lovely thing to see a rose in my yard looking like a real shrub, not just a gangly thing with thorns and a few leaves. It's a very shapely, rounded shrub with abundant foliage.
And finally, I must comment about ARE's wonderful packaging. It is the best in the business. The best roses deserve the best handling, and ARE really seems to put 100% thoughtfulness and quality into everything. I am also very happy with their customer support, and feel very confident ordering from them. Obviously I will be ordering from them again :D

After I ordered two roses online, the company called to talk with me about the shipping date I had chosen. The lady I spoke to was extremely helpful and friendly, advising me that I should wait several weeks more to ship to my zone, and we agreed on a date in the future. Due to some mix-up, however, the roses shipped at the originally scheduled time (almost two months earlier than they should!).
I received another phone message advising me of the situation. She told me that I could return the roses, keep them, donate them to a church, or whatever I wanted to do, but that she would reset my order to be shipped again at the proper time. In effect, she was giving me two free roses to do with as I pleased.
I am new to gardening, and I have ordered from places who sent scraggly, damaged, or miniscule plants, and were next to impossible to get in touch with. I was astounded at the friendliness and integrity of these people, and whether those first two (very healthy-looking) roses I got end up living or dying, I know from now on I will always order my roses from the Antique Rose Emporium.
Hats off to a company who knows what customer service is all about!

Blackspot is to roses as acne is to teenagers and roses that have been moistened well and then packed in an air-tight container are going to have some blackspot, but these had very little. I understand that fungi incubate in shipping. A couple of weeks and there is no blackspot because plants are so healthy. Just take them out, give them some fresh air and blackspot all gone. It's not the grower, it's the beast - that blackspot.
