| Negative | tollhouse (1 review) | On Apr 8, 2004, tollhouse wrote: I like another customer found this site after my horried experience with House of Wesley. I too received what was called "dormant" plants with the exception of a rose bush. To me they looked dead and nothing survived. They shriveled up within days of being planted. The rose bush which was touted as a Blue Moon and was shown blue in the catalogue bloomed pink. I did contact them 3 times to receive money back. At first I was sent a credit. Now why would I want that when everything died and my experience was so awful. Did they honestly think I would order again? The 3rd letter asked for a complete refund and was never answered. So the rose cost me a whole lot more than if I went to the local nursery. I also asked to be taken off their mailing list and that has not been done. I cringe every time a catalogue arrives. I would never do business with them nor recommend them. I get garden catalogues now and I check to make sure they are not connected in any way to House of Wesley. Sure would like the name of a reputable company. |

| Neutral | RRP (2 reviews) | On Mar 27, 2004, RRP wrote: I am leaving a neutral rating because I have not attempted to contact the company in regards to my order. I take partial responsibility because I should have better researched the company instead of ordering from them on faith (though that's what mailorder is all about, isn't it?) Also, none of my items were clearly dead or rotten. What I did get ($50 worth) was crammed into my mailbox in a single plastic envelope. What was inside was laughable. To say I felt ripped off was an understatement. The twelve daylillies I ordered were teeny little 3-bulb rootlets that will take years to produce anything worthwhile, should they live. The three pink pampas grass were crumpled in the envelope (in the mailbox!), but did have a healthy root system. Some would say that what you get is fair for the price, but I would disagree. If I had spent the $11 (for Wesley's "three" pink pampas grass) at the local nursery, I could have gotten a 1-gallon pot with a big, tall, well-rooted plant and could have divided it to make 6 or 8 of the "Wesley" sized version (and would have money leftover). Same with the shasta daisies. I think that their version of a "plant" is more what we would consider a very stingy perennial division. There is something rather shady about the fact that this company has so many names... trying to avoid the "bad press" being attached to a single name? I can't say what their reasoning is, but it makes one wonder. The bottom line: I had lowered expectations because of how cheap some of the stuff was, but the itsy bitsy "plants" that you get don't justify even the itsy bitsy prices! And, just in comparison, I received a daylily order from Gilbert H. Wild the same day and the daylillies that cost me less from them were four times as big and healthy as the Wesley version. Don't be lured by the prices: these are no bargains. These folks give mailorder a bad name. |

| Negative | Justatemp (1 review) | On Mar 22, 2004, Justatemp wrote: The plants I received arrived dry with very little dirt on their roots. The packaging was poor but I was still optimistic. After planting my hostas, clematis and tomato plants I was disappointed in their growth. I contacted the House of Wesley about money back for the clematis (which never did make it) and was treated rudely. I went to the store in person and found a group of workers who knew next to nothing about horticulture. I am an easy to please person but this group of employees were very rude. I would NEVER GO BACK AGAIN... |

| Negative | jbaby (1 review) | On Aug 17, 2003, jbaby wrote: I ordered 12 lavender plants from the House of Wesley in the early spring. When I still hadn't received the plants by early summer, I had to remind the House of Wesley to ship my lavender order. When the lavender arrived, the plants were very small and looked wilted. The planting directions said the lavender plants were shipped dormant, so I thought I would reserve judgement until a later date. 6 plants died right off, but 6 seemed to rally for a time. Over the summer 5 more plants died despite tender care. 1 lavender plant is still alive, but is looking poorly and I don't expect it to live. (I call it my $20 lavender!) I can't help but think the plants might have stood a chance if they had been shipped in the spring. In the end, I had to replace my dead lavender plants with healthy lavender plants bought locally. I would certainly not recommend buying lavender from this company. Don't let the low price hook you! |
| Positive | vanski (1 review) | On Jul 18, 2003, vanski wrote: I have to say, I was worried because I found this site after I had ordered. I ordered 40 Rose of Sharon to form 2 hedges down the sides of my backyard. They arrived quite quickly, within 2 weeks or so, wrapped in bunches of 5, each in a small bag with moisture, and all of them in a huge green bag. OUr mailman left them on our porch. I soaked them in water overnight, planted them (they were very dirty, but not moldy, and were very dormant). Within 1 week, we had buds on about 1/2 of them. Within 2 weeks, we had buds on all of them (even the one we broke while planting), and now, 6 weeks later, they are filling out, and have grown about 6 inches. I don't know if I will order from them again based on everyone's reviews, but on this one order, I did have a great experience. Maybe because I am in Illinois, like they are...I don't know. And they are very cheap. 40-2 foot bushes were $35...you can't beat that. |

( you know 4 to 6 weeks ship time). I have just gotten thier order in mid may. Part of the problem they say was the postal service for not bringing the package to the building, and for placing a 6" thick Grainger catalog on top of it... This is still the nurseries fault also, as there were no markings on the outside of the package to say fragile, live plants, or anything. but any way the package was a big paper envelope. The plants were individually wrapped in plastic bags w/ no air holes and then placed all in the same plastice outer bag and then shoved in an envelope. All of the plants except for the freebie daylillies are dead, mostly mush and mold. I sent them a three page letter explaining the condition of my order and how it arrived. i included the origingal shipping label (still attached to the entire envelope. They sent back my letter and label telling me that in order for them to help me i would have to send in the label for package two also. For one I have not gotten a package 2 nor was there any problems with it except that i dont have it. I would like to know where most of you are finding phone numbers for these people because i came here looking for the number thinking it was part of the nursery. they dont publish it in the catalog nor is it included in the shipment just in case you need to call. (i was unaware this wonderfull site was here.) I wished i had checked here first. |

After waiting 4 weeks and not receiving anything, I sent a follow up email asking the status of the order. I did not receive a correspondence until 5/1/03 saying the order had been shipped and I should receive it in 7-14 days. I have never received the order and called their customer service at the end of May asking for a status update. Their computer system was down and nobody could determine anything for 2 days! When I called back 2 days later, they still had no information on the status of the order. I finally received a postcard on 6/16 that says they cannot supply the order until 2004! If I had known they had NO IDEA that they could supply the items, I would have ordered from another company! They also require me to send a follow up letter requesting them to credit my visa card. I essentially gave them a 2 ½ month loan. I will NEVER order another item from them. This company is completely incompetent! AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE! |

The Honeysuckle hedge does not seem to like our soil but is responding to fertilizer. All trees are budding nicely, and all but a few of the groundcovers made it. I added compost and mulched them all. Not a one came back this spring. Let me rephrase that,,,5 of 24 Stargazer Lilies came up. On May 31st, 2003, MossRose added the following: I have received a Replacement Certificate for $132.21. Redeemable through the catalog only,,,and of course I don't have one. I have requested one. I wish I could post a photo of the trumpet lily bulbs I received, and I will post the pic on another forum. They are covered with slim and mold and more mushy than mashed potatoes. I don't even want to talk about the other $100 worth of dead/dying/slimy plants I received. I say we run them out of town on a rail!!!! |

Ordering in March and now it is mid May I tried to get some positive answers to my questions concerning my order.I told them that if I did't receive my order in a timely manner I would contact my credit card company, and tell them that this was a fraudulant company. I didn't realize at the time that I ordered that there was a WATCHDOG WEB SITE. Still there was no answer and no plants. My only regret is that I didn't know about this web site before ordering. When I sent email regarding my order, I was told that the rest of my order was coming in the next shipment. We ordered from this company because we have some major property line planting to do and it was the cheapest way to do it. We came in well prepared that all of the plants will not do well. But the plants that we order cost about 6 bux a piece in a local nursery and we were able to get 8 for 4 bux. So we can afford for some of them not to do well. I do have to say that my pampas grass was in good shape when it got here. So I guess that's a good sign. I will post again when the rest of my order gets here with the results. |

But then those replacement plants died and we are waiting for the 2 round to be received. |

| Negative | Mary_Fair (7 reviews) | On Jan 26, 2003, Mary_Fair wrote: Why am I not surprised to read all the negative comments. Their experiences are an exact duplicate of mine. I knew better. Thank goodness I didn't spend a lot of money with them. I went against all my beliefs about ordering from a catalog that refers to plants as "pink", "red", "purple," or "smokebush" rather than the botanical names and is printed on newsprint paper, rather than the more expensive catalogs. These companies think they are dealing with people who don't know the difference. They have little or nothing invested and can afford to displease because they have nothing to lose. So, why did I buy? Their prices were so cheap, I thought I might luck out. Greed is the major trait of all patsies. For my money, I felt lucky to get 4 out of 6 Japanese iris to put up shoots. For the sad vestiges of the other plants, (who knows, were plants ever really in those sacks?) I'll chalk it up to experience. |

Two weeks later, I am already having to trim the hedges back. All of them have great leaves and growing fast. |
