This year, I ordered a total of three dozen plants from them, mostly rhododendrons and azaleas, but also two enkianthus plants. They were able to fill every order completely. The plants were always beautiful and exceptionally well-packed and always arrived here in Rhode Island in either one (FedEx) or two days (UPS) from New Jersey. Their inventory of rhododendron and azalea hybrids is very extensive. Their website provides all the necessary information on each plant to facilitate choices well-matched to one's hardiness zone and site requirements. They even sent me a lovely Kaye Player rhododendron gratis! Wonderful folks! |
| Positive | Hsingfu (1 review) | On Nov 12, 2010, Hsingfu Greensboro, NC wrote: I purchased an amazing BETULA nigra 'Shiloh Splash' from Rare Find Nursery back in June and carefully tended it through one of the worst summers I can remember only to watch it slowly drop its foliage and eventually die. I finally, with encouragement from friends, wrote to Rare Finds and asked if they would consider a replacement. They promptly said yes. I do not know them personally but know people who does. Everyone says that they are great people who run a first rate company. This experience reinforces that notion and I hope everyone will help to support their effort during this difficult economic time. |

I have ordered from them several times over a two year period and have never been disappointed. Well packed, healthy, good-sized plants with beautiful roots arrive in a timely manner. All have thrived in my garden. I have used mail order nurseries for three decades in both a professional and personal capacity and none out-shines Rare Find. Order with confidence! |
| Positive | jamwv (1 review) | On Oct 8, 2010, jamwv Charleston, WV wrote: I ordered 7 hydrangea that are difficult to find from RFN. They arrived today and I was impressed enough to become a member of Dave's Garden to give RFN a positive review. The DG reviews say the plants are large and RFN says their plants are large. Large can be subjective and I expected an acceptable size. The plants I received are big. They are very healthy. They were packed securely and shipped perfectly. I called RFN with a question earlier in the week. The person who answered the telephone was knowledgeable about the order and answered my questions courteously and expeditiously. I was looking for 2 particular plants and ordered 7 so the bill was considerably more than I had planned on. I am completely satisfied that I received my money's worth. I appreciate it. It was a good ending to the summer. I am looking forward to the next one when the plants bloom. Thanks! |

The staff was very nice, especially Ron Rabideau and gave me a personal tour of each greenhouse. I especially appreciated all the wonderful Rhododendron recommendations. There are so many new varieties one could not possibly know them all. Despite the hot summer the inventory looked great, especially the several amazing variegated plants (Clethra barbinervis, Caryopteris, Camellia, etc.)! The display gardens are vast and must be amazing in the Spring....I'll simply have to go back. I can't comment yet on the mail order aspect, but given the consummate professionalism exhibited elsewhere, I'm sure you can order from them online with confidence! This vendor is simply beyond words! I'm gushing! (but they are so worth it!) |

I replied that same day asking them to cancel my order and that I would get the bamboo somewhere else. Then I bought the bamboo on eBay. Today (a week after I told them to cancel my order) I get a notice from UPS that they have shipped the bamboo. I tried calling to resolve this but can’t get anyone on the phone. Shrubs were also within the size range stated and well packed. They included a free copy of their impressive catalog as well. One shrub dropped most of its leaves during transit but suspect it will leaf out again next Spring. |

A friend and I visited this past Friday. We were to shop for a few Rhododendrons for his land in the Poconos, and I was going to treat myself to a magnolia. We had ideas of what we wanted, and what would be hardy for our areas, from the terrific website. I had e-mailed a query as to whether they still had inventory on hand and how up-to-date the website was, and got a response from Hank Schannen (the owner) within a day that they did have a good deal on hand and that a visit would be worth the trip. What an understatement! We were greeted by Hank, who took us on a tour, via his golf cart, of the multiple shade and sun houses and display gardens. The conversation was lively, and peppered with anecdotes about plants, customers, the business, etc. What a great experience to speak with someone who is actually MAKING some of the hybrids one is viewing, and knows the folks who made some of the other ones! |

It was a pleasure to do business with them. A great outfit !! |

I live in WV and they are located in NJ, but when I ordered two Mt. St. Helens Azaleas, FedEx routed them through ARIZONA!! I expected them to be dead. When my crushed box arrived, I had two living plants - still. They had nice root balls- still moist, they had lost most of their leaves, but are already beginning to recover!! After discovering the shipping issue, Rare Find Nursery staff were wonderful and offered to replace the plants regardless of whether FedEX would reimburse them. The next pair arrived and are beautiful. Fast shippers!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! |

I don't mind paying a bit extra when the goods and service are superior. |

This small tree was everything they advertised in terms of size and vigor. The shipping was extremely quick - just in time for my first garden club tour. The packing resulted in very few brusied leaves, despite the large bushy sized tree and no broken limbs. I couldn't have been more pleased. I searched everywhere for this tree. They have quite a selection of the rare finds! On November 20th, 2008, snapple45 added the following: I recieved another order of Japanese Maples from Rare Find Nursery today - Koto Hime and Beni Hemi. | Positive | plantslayer (17 reviews) | On May 4, 2008, plantslayer Raymond, ME wrote: I just received my first order from Rare find last week. It was a joy to unpack. The plants are HUGE. They are in such good health, with outstanding root systems. The packing was alot different than I am used to, but they arrived in great condition, so no complaints here. They are a bit pricey but the plants you get are so large and healthy I think it is worth it. For example I ordered a Chamaecyparis "Curly Tops" for $35. I hemmed and hawed about the price but took the plunge and ordered it, and I am so glad I did. It is so big (for a dwarfish shrub anyway), I don't know how they made any money on that sale. The 5 other trees and shrubs I ordered where much larger than I expected too. On November 14th, 2008, plantslayer added the following: I have placed 2 more orders with this company, and my first order was not a fluke. Just beautiful and huge plants. If you are a complete plant dork, like myself, you have to give this company a try. I oooh and aaahhh the entire time I unpack my orders. Trees, shrubs, perennials, grasses, it doesn't matter what you order, they are gorgeous. They have outstanding customer service as well. Out of my top 3 mail order companies, they tie for 1st. |

This year, I wanted a tree that could only be picked up in person. I drove to the nursery, and couldn't have been more pleased with the people and the plants. My tree was great, I had 6 to pick from, and they were all great! Hank the owner, drove me around in his golf cart and gave me a tour and history of his place and the plants. Needless to say, I bought more than I orginally had planned. Great quality plants, great people, (Bill is a big asset to the place), and a real treasure here in New Jersey. Go, you will NOT be disappointed. |
