Information on Berkeley Horticultural Nursery

Eh...nah.

I go to Berkeley Hort for immediate needs. I can barely find help and when I do, they don't know anything. I asked if their nectarines were self-pollinating; four people had no idea. I asked if they bad blueberries; I was directed to (no escort) to five packs of dormant strawberries.

They have a small and very generic selection of vegetables. But at least those veggies look healthy and will grow for amateurs.

Another good thing: I found catnip and garlic, which are both oddly hard to find from nurseries near me.

Still, I'll go somewhere else if I have time.

Excellent selection of CA natives and other specimens as well as in-season veggies. Mostly self-service. There seems to be enough staff who are nice enough but not all are knowledgeable, more like stock staff rather than gardeners themselves. My husband hates to go there b/c of the narrow streets and NO parking as it is street parking in a residential area.

I use Berkeley Hort only in cases of dire necessity. They don't seem to have the time to help a customer unless that customer looks like or somehow signals that s/he is looking to spend multi-bucks. Yes, the selection is large, but the staff I've tried to work with acted as though I was a lesser form of life when I told them that I was looking for the amount/plant I wanted. Not happy here w/Berkeley Hort.

Too many of the staff members don't have the time to assist customers and some are too arrogant to concede that a customer may have any knowledge of plants or gardening. I've been ignored and insulted there too many times to make their nice collection of overpriced plants worth another visit. The experiences were so negative that I gave away a gift certificate so that I would not be tempted to return.

An absolute favorite stop for their great variety of plant selections and specialties! Situated on an almost 2 acre block within a residential neighborhood, this nursery is a must visit for any serious plant collector with great selections of CA Natives, Mediterranean plants, Roses, Camellias, Rhododendrons, Tropicals, Cacti, Bulbs, Fruit Trees, and Organic Vegetables. Staff is knowledgeable and helpful.

Simply the best in all areas that a gardener would care about: well grown plants, excellent selection, customer service, and a well maintained clean facility. Also a nice selection of garden accessories. The limited parking is just part of the Berkeley experience and should not make you hesitate to visit this Bay Area gem.

Superior selection, knowledgeable staff, and beautiful specimen plants characterize this long-established Berkeley institution. Prices are high, but the variety of plants available in numerous categories--roses, Japanese maples, groundcovers, aquatics, bedding plants, sun-loving perennials, California natives, bulbs, rhododendrons--make Berkeley Hort the Promised Land of retail nurseries in the Bay Area. It's worth a trip, if only to salivate over the endless possibilities.

My number one most frequently visited nursery! They are always getting new plants in, so I go at least once a month and often more frequently than that to make sure I don't miss anything. They have a great selection of tropicals & semi-tropicals, as well as a lot more variety in the types of shrubs and perennials they carry than many other local nurseries that I go to. Staff members are very friendly and knowledgable. My only complaint is the parking situation...there's no parking lot and it's in a crowded area so often I end up having to park several blocks away. (But you'll notice that doesn't stop me from visiting!)
