Unique to the world, Hawaii’s native plants and animals have roots in far away lands, but arrived to the islands without human intervention. Here they evolved into splendid new forms of life, adapting to the climate and available resources. Each is believed to have come by air, some attached to or inside birds, or by sea, drifting onshore along with other floating debris. Each species depends on each other to provide and sustain a healthy habitat for survival.
Perpetuating the native species of Hawai`i is essential to preserving the unique character of this land. Too many species have already become extinct, and several more are threatened or endangered. Most depend on human intervention for survival.
