Mass Horticultural Society is the oldest horticultural society in the US. It is most known for its annual flower show -- New England Spring Flower Show held in March. Mass Hort has an impressive library, runs courses and events, has display gardens at its headquarters - Elm Bank (36 acres), publishes various publications (Horticulture Magazine) etc. Recently it has become involved with the design and development of the new gardens on the Rose Kennedy Greenway in Boston.
I've gone to the flower show annually since 1993. Some years are better than others (exhibits, speakers, vendors). The quality of the show has greatly improved in the last few years and was excellent this year. The speakers, some nationally known people in the plants world, are always a treat to hear.
During a 10 year stretch, unfortunately the society suffered from poor leadership and management, was forced to sell rare books and prints, and had to back out of developing a glass house on one of the parcels on the Greenway. The flower show also suffered during this time. Hopefully this is behind them and they can have continued success in the future.
