The garden center building is home to many gardening clubs in the Houston area. The grounds around the building are full of thousands of rose bushes. Come when the roses are blooming for a spectacular sight. Many wedding photos are taken here.

There is also a nice little Japanese style garden in the Herman complex. Very peaceful.

For families, there is plenty to do out here. There is the zoo of course, the museum, golf, jogging trails, plenty of open park grounds for barbecue, a train, a catch and release pond, and the Miller outdoor theater. Over the summer, the theater features free performances by the Houston Symphony. On the 4th of July this is the place to be.

Being so close to Rice University, you can almost always find people out jogging all times of the day. A very safe area. And if you get hurt, you are right next to the famous hospital district (God forbid).
