I had a great visit and the various themed gardens are nicely laid out. Despite a few missing labels, the variety and unusual and rare plants were a delight. The Subtropical Fruit Garden was unique (for me) and it was interesting to see plants grown a bit more naturally (xeriscape) than heavily irrigated. I now realize I missed a big portion of the gardens so give yourself atleast a day if not 2.

Had some extra time while in San Diego a couple years' ago, so I visited on a whim. WOW-what a treat! Amazing diversity in plant life. I especially enjoyed how they were mapped out by region with trails meandering and connecting the different areas. The underwater themed succulent display in the children's area was superb.
I'll be in San Diego again in a couple weeks and can't wait to spend another day in these beautiful gardens!

This is a wonderful public garden with some of the nicest specimens of tropical plants seen anywhere. One of their specialties is bamboo, and they have the largest bamboo collection (I think, in the world?) in terms of diversity. They also have a nice palm and cycad collection, as well as a great succulent collection.
The garden is located atop a hill overlooking the Pacific in Encinitas, just 1/2 hour north of San Diego, California. It has a pretty ideal climate for lots of plants- never freezes, but is also no very warm (so many tropical plants grow slowly there). It is exceptionally landscaped and very attractive- great place to photograph plants! THey have the gardens basically divided into a tropical area, complete with waterfall and seveal ponds, the bamboo area, the succulent garden, a fern garden, a foresty area, cycad section, a native garden section (relatively new) and lots of area to expand into. They also have a nice plant shop which, sometimes has some rare and interesting specimens.
This is also a popular site for gardens shows, sales, plant society meetings and weddings.
