To root Junipers (including most all “rootable” conifers) a mix of (4) parts perlite to (1) part peat moss is excellent and also very sterile. Bottom heat in the range of 68-72 degrees is desired and cuttings should be misted at least 4 times daily. A professional grower might mist them as often as twice an hour. Also, all Junipers are compatible among species for grafting purposes. Juniperus scopulorum can be a tough species as can Juniperus Virginia to root from cuttings so instead, it is commonly grafted to scopulorum (Rocky Mountain Juniper) rootstock/understock. ‘The two most frequently used understocks for all Juniper grafting are the straight species scopulorum and Juniperous x phitzeriana ‘Heitzi’. Those that are successful rooting scopulorum also use scopulorum cuttings as rootstocks as they grow rapidly as a rooted cutting making a sizeable understock in a short period of time.’ (Source Coenosium Gardens)
