And it sure seems that any ads or articles about either should highlight the fact. Both are noteworthy, but this one is half the size, so be sure you know which you want. The other is Cercidiphyllum japonicum.

It returned many times over the years and traveled with me to Chicago for a show there also it won many ribbons over the next ten years. The tree has lived in Maryland, Washington DC, South Michigan and now in Central Florida. Being in Florida I've been warned I have 3 to 7 years before it dies. I defoliated the Katsura's twice a year depending which of the 4 I have, all are off springs of the first. The Grandmother started in 1980 became a bonsai in 1990 and in 2005 through air layering gave birth to the Mother which will become a bonsai in 2015. The Mother has had 2 more air layering one here in Florida 2013 and again this year. I hope to make it to 2020 to see if I have broken the Florida death cycle. I have photos on my Facebook page. I would not plant one in Florida, the sun is too much and couldn't imagine defoliating it.

In fall, they turn orange, pink and yellow shades. Very few maples can compare to the beauty of this one. Although trees may reach 6-7 m, they can be kept quite small and can actually be used for bonsai or containers. It is not as hardy as some Japanese maples and benefits from a sheltered site.
