This is the surviving member of a genus that is thought to be in the region of 200 million years old. Unique among trees for its leaf shape, it is grown for its interesting green foliage, which colours yellow in Autumn, and is usually planted as a specimen tree. It thrives best in any well drained soil, in full sun, and in regions with hot summers. Its tolerance of pollution make it excellent for cities. It usually only flowers after twenty years or more of growth. I was fortunate to have one growing on my property. Being deciduous, it gave welcoming shade in the Summer, and let the sunshine through in the Winter.
It is a native of China, and can grow upwards of 65 ft (20 m) and can have a spread of up to 50 ft (15 m), and grows quite rapidly.
