Deodar Cedar, Himalayan Cedar 'Kashmir'

Hardier than most, I doubt the zone 5 rating here. This is not of the hardy Patki group from Afghanistan (some of which are hardy to zone...Read More 5). Rather, it is a nursery trade selection. Although a pretty tree, zones 5 & 6 gardeners are much safer choosing selections from the Patki group. I read a blog entry by a zone 5 gardener from Indiana who tried several Cedrus very near each other. In last years very hard winter 'Aurea' died outright, 'Kashmir' experienced significant winter burn, but survived, while 'Karl Fuchs' (one of the Patki selections) thrived completely unscathed. So, while it may survive in 5, it will suffer damage, making 'Karl Fuchs' the better choice.

Although...Read More our Kashmir does have some shelter from the harshest winds, the cold did not cause any damage at all. Pictures provided are of our tree that has been in place for five years. It needed supplemental support for the first three years. Although the top of the tree tends to nod, growth remains perfectly upright.
