This is the absolute closest you’re going to get to a tropical Croton in zone 7. Aucuba does extremely well here in Salt Lake City, Utah (zone 7b) it can get extremely large (8-10’ high and wide) here and is never damaged by our winters. It’s also growing in popularity again and can be found at lots of local and big box nurseries. This plant absolutely NEEDS to be planted in shade though and watered relatively frequently, especially here with our 100-105+ degree temps in the summer. This is one of the best looking broadleaf evergreen shrubs that you could ever grow in zone 7, and I would highly recommend it for a shady and sheltered spot.

I now will be propagating it and will try to move it as well to a more shady location in the yard. It is been there for at least 5 years I was told by a neighbor and it seems to grow well and winter well here in VA. My soil is slightly acidic and it does not seem to bother this plant. Very pretty yellow spotted foliage is great contrast to most deep green plants.

It has done beautifully and since have purchased 4 more. I have it in mostly shade and it seems to thrive.
although it does get some winter burn it recovers very well. I love it for the foliage, color and ease!

I planted one several winters ago here in Stamford CT..on a dappled shade southern exposure which gets quite a bit of sun through out the day and it doing fine ,,it went thru a winter with temps of -10 with burlp thrown over it without damage and last winter i didn't protect it and it did just fine .
they will burn if in hot full sun .. but i think further North a little sun helps them
