Leaflets are wide, deep, dark green and only have a spine or two at the tip... some forms almost spineless. Differs from the very similar E altensteinii in that it suckers more profusely, has darker, wider leaflets, and leaves have spines for leaflets near their bases, instead of fully fromed leaves. But I still have trouble telling them apart. Commonly hybridized with other species of Encephalartos. Variegated forms occur (but not sun hardy). Several distinct varieties occur throughout it's rather broad range through South Africa.
