A very interesting caudiciform succulent plant is Dioscorea hemicrypta, found as a component of the Succulent Karoo habitat in the Huisrivier Canyon. Related to the more widely known Dioscorea elephantipes, the caudex of D. hemicrypta is not quite as large or as rounded, resembling more of a cylindrical tree stump than the hemispherical dome of a tortoise shell. The individual here has a woody base nearly 3 feet (90 cm) thick. A tangle of vining stems erupts from the top of the plant and scrambles through the bushes nearby. Plants can be hard to photograph but this one was more visible due to being on the edge of a road cut embankment.
