Its needles are in bundles of 2, are about 2.5 to 4.5 inches long, dark green, lustrous, thick, stout, usually sort of twisted, and very prickly. The conical cones are about 1.5 to 3 inches long with minute prickles. It is very tolerant of salt spray from the ocean. It is highly susceptible to the Pinewood Nematode that is passed on by pine bark beetles. In some areas, as around Atlanta, Georgia, it is highly susceptible to Diploidia Tip Blight that kills off many plants even before ten years old. It is doing well along the shore areas of the Delmarva Peninsula.

It has stalked cones and the scales have tiny prickles. The needles do not break crisply when bent.
