The occasional bright orange blooms come sparingly in late summer. You grow this plant for its foliage, not its blooms.
If the foliage gets straggly-looking, just cut to the ground, and apply a shovel full of composted manure. You'll have fresh leaves in no time. It spreads, but not as aggressively as some cannas.
In my Houston-area garden, the plant is dormant only for a short period of time. I'll try to post a photo later when they've grown a bit taller.
