On alkaline soils it may be puplish red. Flowering occurs late in the summer. The sepals are heavily serrate, overlapping and cupped. Not suitable as a pot plant. It can even be used as a hedging plant, due to its strong growth. This cultivar can be confused with the similar 'Hamburg' or 'Altona'. Also well-known for the quality of dried flowers. Autumn color can be very conspicuous. Bred by H. Schadendorff, Germany, in 1931. RHS Award: AGM 1992.
