Graptophyllum Species, Caricature Plant, Jamaican Croton

I have 2 of these Graptophyllum plants both about 3 foot tall. From May-Oct they get full South Florida sun but during Nov - Apr they rec...Read Moreeive part sun. They seem to thrive in either lighting condition without much stress to the plant. My soil is the typical sandy Florida limestone mix with some peat moss that was added about a year ago. They get the ocassional sprinkling of palm fertilizer and bloom regularly. I rarely need to groom these babies - great addition to the sub-tropical landscape.

It lost all its leaves during light winter freezes here but grew back quickly. However, for me the main problem has been damage from deer. We have more every year and they really love this plant! I still feel it's worth the effort, and I always have a couple of cuttings started on the patio just in case the deer get carried away.

Almost nothing will take practically no sun for 2/3 of the year and then full sun for summer, but these plants thrive there (I'm assuming it's since its sun-time also correlates with the wet season).

I have three of the same kind and all look great. They are relatively fast growing where I have them and do get pruned. Twice I had to prune them back really hard and they quickly filled in. They have never dropped leaves for me in the winter and I noticed that their roots have spread out over an impressively large and deep area. Mine started flowering last week.

I highly recommend these in areas that get seasonal sun but no frost. They took water to get established, but after their first year have never needed extra water here. These are absolutely great.
