The crop that did manage to be on or near the ground did curl and taper. The cukes that were hanging grew two feet+ long and straight. The Yamato has very few spines with shiny green skin.
Out of the six cukes I started last spring Yamato produced first and continued to produce well after the others, with the exception of the Super Zagross, had peaked. It was amazing to see the cucumbers grow inches in few days! In a neighborhood blind taste test with Lemon, Double Yield, Straight 8, Super Zagross and Spacemaster Bush- the Yamato won. I only wish I had another trellis available to start a late summer crop…

This cucumber is a traditional variety from historic Yamato Province now known as Nara Prefecture of Japan. Sanjaku means three feet. This cucumber variety produces a generous crop of remarkably long, narrow fruit. It is best if harvested up to 2 feet long with a 2" diameter — throughout the growing season. A few white spines appear on the light green skin, which encloses sweet, crisp white flesh and a relatively small seed cavity. Ideal for a cold cucumber salad, this variety is delicious prepared fresh or lightly cooked in Asian dishes. The Yamato Sanjaku is perfect for pickling, as well. 75 days.
