It is a magnolia that should be more available in the trade.

'Joe McDaniel' magnolia has been a trooper of a plant here in central KY. It was the first "oddball" magnolia I acquired (some dozen or ...Read Moremore years ago) from of all places - a Holly Society plant auction. It was because it was named for one of the greats of the horticultural world (as well as the supposed very dark red to purple large flowering character) that I had to give it a try.
It has done nothing but reward. The blooms are large, many, and true to reputation in color. The plant has tolerated lows in the -20ºF range and the hottest droughtiest summers.
'Joe McDaniel' magnolia is one of the many Gresham hybrids and is considered the darkest flowering selection of them all. The complex parentage derives from M. x soulangeana 'Rustica Rubra' x M. x veitchii.
This plant deserves far greater use and treatment than I've given it. Look for it for specimen use in your garden.
