In 1985, I was about to leave Tasmania after 12 years to move to Victoria where I have lived ever since. On my last weekend in Tassie, 13th October 1985, I was planning a last explore of Tasmania and the morning before, I was browsing through a record of rare Tasmanian plants, and I read to my surprise that Stackhousia gunnii, was possibly extinct. I planned my days outing to include the spot where I had seen it before and within 3 hours of reading that the plant was extinct, I was looking at live plants in full flower.
I provided evidence to the state herbarium on the Monday, and they told me that it had been rediscovered at one location (about 5 km from where I had found it), but they confirmed the identity and have now taken steps to preserve the locality on a roadside verge. It is now listed as endangered rather than extinct!
