This species is native from the Virginia coast down through the Florida panhandle, west into central Texas, and north into mid Missouri and southern Indiana and Ohio. It is successfully grown throughout Ohio and Indiana, as well as northern Illinois and Iowa.
'Royal Guard' exhibits extremely lustrous dark green foliage through the growing season, and turns a fine reddish purple in the fall. It flowers heavily, and produces copious fruit that turns dark blue before consumption by birds.
'Royal Guard' rusty blackhaw can grow just about anywhere, but it favors clay loams of average fertility and neutral pH. Tolerant of drought and shade in its native haunts, it is absolutely happy to have full sun and average moisture in your landscape.
