It needs a fertile, well drained soil in full sun or partial shade, though it will flower at its best when in full sun. Hardiness: Hardy in some regions; needs frost-free protection in winter.
'Alice Hindley' is one of the oldest hybrids in cultivation today. It was introduced in 1931 by the Scottish firm, John Forbes of Hawick, which from 1870 until its demise in 1968 was the largest Penstemon grower in the world. In 1900 the Forbes nursery offered 550 different penstemons.
