'Emerald Luster' viburnum is very similar to the arrowwood group of viburnums, having the same white flower heads in early summer (May/Ju...Read Morene here in KY). After the many pollinators have their way, the heavy fruit heads ripen to dark blue glossy fruit by mid July/August. Birds then visit upon them, and busily set about stripping the fruit.
'Emerald Luster' blooms later than most arrowwoods; a good pollinating partner would be either Autumn Jazz® or Northern Burgundy®. These would also match well with the excellent dark green thick glossy foliage of 'Emerald Luster'.
Dr. Dirr selected this plant for reliable performance through the heat of southeast summers. 'Emerald Luster' also bears decent fall foliage color, with reds-purples-oranges-yellows all on the same plant.
This plant can tolerate a range of soil pH and varying moisture conditions. It is very happy with additional water, but it doesn't need it. My oldest plant is reaching 12' x 12' after about 15 years, and it is located near a downspout where it gets adequate water (when it rains).
