This Mexican spruce was only discovered in 1942 by Mexican botanist Maximin Martinez. It resembles the Colorado blue spruce (picea punge...Read Morens) but has longer needles which are so sharp that they draw blood if handled. This tree has only recently found its way into the nursery trade and is still very rare. Sadly it is even more rare in the wild and is believed to be destined to become extinct. Only 25 remnant stands exist, (of only a few hundred indiviuals) in Chihuahua and Durango in the Sierra Madre Mountains at elevations of 2300 to 3200 meters.
