The petiole is a dark red, hence the name given to the palm. The leaves can reach up to 20 feet before any trunk will form according to habitat pictures. Seeds are notoriously hard to germinate, and getting one leaf on a seedling is a great achievement in itself. This palm grows in a few disjunct areas in the Masoala area of NE Madagascar, where it is critically endangered.
