I think the bright red zinnias that bloom in late summer and autumn attract the attention of ruby-throated hummingbirds flying over our yard on their migration south for the winter and will entice them to stop at our place.
Normally hummingbirds like 'cone shaped' blooms, but they are always interested in checking out any red flowers and for us in late summer Ohio red zinnias are some of the best for this purpose.
We also provide our red (plastic) nectar feeders for the birds to fill up on.
