The rush foliage is hollow and will bend or fall over if windy. I tend to set mine lower in the water to help keep them upright. The cream and white striped stems are very pretty against a contrasting background.
To over winter, I simply cut it off at the top of the pot and sink it to the bottom of the pond. Only the top 2 or 3 inches of our pond freezes, as it is spring fed.

It doesn't crowd it's pot and is easier to keep under control than the more common Horsetail Rush. This is an especially nice choice to add height to a small patio tub to be planted with water plants, as it won't overwhelm the rest of the tub. Set it's pot at, or slightly above the water line. Divide the rootball when the plant gets too big for it's pot.
Scirpus zebrinus is another and more commonly used name. I bought one this spring. It's very beautiful.
