From coastal areas of South America where it grows in areas where very little else grows- very drought tolerant species. The white coloration is a waxy coating presumably to prevent dessication in it's extremely dry environment. Despite the lack of rain where it lives, the climate is usually foggy so the plants experience little hot, direct sun, and seem to do best in cultivation with a bit of shade. Prone to rot if overwatered. Not highly tolerant of a great deal of frost.
