Very sturdy and robust for a species tulip..to me, the half-closed blooms looked somewhat like a rosebud.

In ...Read Moreretrospect, the description on here is wrong pertaining to their self-seeding abilities, as they have reliably multiplied at the bulb *and* come true from seed, with several volunteers popping up in adjacent beds. Not that I mind, these are brilliantly colored, reliably mid-late flowering and have blooms that last much longer than many of the species tulips. While not as big as hybrids, they make make a nicely sized clump that stands out against the brunnera.
