| "When we bought our first house last year, I volunteered to do the gardening, because there was a beautiful garden on the front and side of the house I didn't want to lose. I took a gardening course over the winter and started a bunch of plants from seed. Ignoring the mocking of my wife over the meagre results, I perservered, finding it a perfect outlet for my inner artist. I have made all the rookie mistakes, and became so desperate for color in my barren border I actually transplanted some ground ivy there (though I was not so dumb as to not pull it all out once the purple flowers faded). I also managed to cultivate some very interesting weeds and unexpected tomato plants there. I had better luck out front and at the side of my house, where I even found a Siberian bugloss hiding beneath my peonies (which I moved so it was more visible) Anyway, I'm slowly learning, and have managed to raise some Zinnias, South African Foxglove and Columbines from seed (the jury's still out on my Astranias and Hellebores)." |
