These flowers did not open all the way for me before they broke apart. A distinguishing characteristic of the 'Port Wine' cultivar is the very light green leaves.

You can see the color of the inside of the flower petals before they fell apart.

The flowers don't often open all the way, but the petals inside are purple.

Unfortunately, regular Banana shrub is often called 'Port Wine,' but the real 'Port Wine' cultivar has purple flowers.

My banana shrub is approx. 10 ft. tall and floods my yard with the most wonderful fruity scent.
