The leaves entirely enclose the stems and have a zigzag pattern which I find fascinating. They look as if they are sewn together or strung like a necklace. I thought this might be U. perfoliata, but according to my references it seems to be U. grandiflora. I will move the images if other information changes my mind.

The interesting foliage will stay fresh all summer if watered, but otherwise goes dormant with the usual droughts of July and August here in Missouri.

The bell shaped seed pod may have helped in determining the common name.
