These are very old "trees", maybe 70 years or more, but they are actually so small that they are classed as shrubs.

Dirca palustris flower closeup March 10, 2012 zone 5 Nebraska Flowers emerge directly from prior year leaf scar. No bud is ever visible. Note interesting bark.

Dirca palustris branch structure. Flowering March 10, 2012 zone 5 Eastern Nebraska. Daffodil foliage on right. Plant 10 yrs old, 4 ft tall from a 1 ft transplant. Clay soil.
