Bought this Pineapple plant with a Tennis Ball size fruit from a Supermarket. The ad said that it was growing to be a full-size fruit in that pot.

As I fertilized, watered and eagerly waited for it to become a full-size fruit, within a month it became perfectly ripe with the right smell and the right color.
The size however remained the same.

Northcentral Florida, Zone 8b. Pineapples must be grown in pots here, and overwintered in a greenhouse. This one is growing at a friends place, who commented that their pineapple are much better than store bought, because you can let them ripen on the vine.

I harvested four of these today. 8/3/03. there is nothing like truly ripe pineapple. supermarket stuff is, well, supermarket stuff.

Looking down at flowering stage of pineapple. In Sebring, Florida this thrives in pure sandy soil with relatively little water, mostly flowering in March or so and fruiting in June and July, with later flowering and fruiting on some plants. It is not killed by temperatures in the mid-20\\\'s, so I would consider it hardy in Zone 9b and 10.

I started with three plants, (pineapple bought from store and planted the tops)now I have about 50 in my backyard. Each plant produces 5-8 "suckers" or "offshoots". They grow good in a well drained, sandy soil ammended with horse manure.

A small patch of pineapple (Ananas comosus) growing on a hillside in Maui. The locals sell them along the roadways. I am not sure if these are 'Maui Gold' which is the best pineapple I have ever eaten.
