I allow this to spread as much in winter so that it covers as much surface of the pond to screen the pond from summer sun.

I started with five tiny plants and now I put the tiny babies in the top streamlet to grow. They have helped keep up my pond this summer.

Water lettuce (Pistia stratiotes), which are at the bottom right of the photo, prefers partial shade. Its roots provide a spawning and hiding area for fish and they enjoy nibbling on them as well. (Shown in a pond in Maui)
