This is a happy little deep red sage that appears to have eyes and a large mouth and looks like it is wearing a plumed hat. The white pollen falls onto the petals of the "mouth" and looks like snow. (San Antonio, Tx.)

Deep, bright red blooms. Notice the strange shapes of the blooms as they are budding out. The sepals themselves look like reptiles. If you want to see how really weird these look, copy the photo to your computer and increase the size.
