Skimmia japonica in October. To produce abundant berries, grow a male Skimmia japonica among several female bushes. It is best grown in full shade (as in this picture) to part shade.

Skimmia japonica - a close-up of the berries. The berries last through the winter, and stick around until March to May. Those remaining on the shrub in May start to germinate BEFORE they drop off.

Skimmia japonica has a lot going for it. It is an evergreen, hardy shrub with leaves that remain fresh and glossy all year long. The bright red berries are borne all winter long. The fragrance when it flowers is to die for. It tolerates full shade to boot.
