The rosettes of leaves are shiny and green, distinguishing them from Menziesia ferruginea (which with I'm inclined to confuse it at first glance), which has dull, glaucous leaf rosettes.

Habitat is subalpine forest edge and clearings in wetter, higher snowfall areas.
