The long styles once freed from the perianth, give all leucospermums the appearance of a pincushion which is how they got the nickname of Pincushion Protea. Here they are acting as pollen presenters.

The stigmas popping out on the styles, giving it the characteristic look of a pincushion. The pistils act as pollen presenters initially after being freed.
