This wildflower (forb)is frequently found in open sandy or rocky upland prairies and patures of the southwestern tallgrass region, from eastern Kansas and Missouri southward.
Each flower is 5/8 to 1" long, with a narrow tubular calyx with 5 spiney teeth and a 2-lipped, widely spreading, pinkish lavender corolla. Leaves are up to 3" long and about 3/4" wide, broadest at or below the middle, which taper to pointed tips. Leaves on the upper part of the stem are often in whorls.

The color of the 3/4 inch flowers and the bracts vary. These flowers are almost white. The bracts often take on a purple hue.
