This is the seed head of the plant Tragopogon pratensis ssp. minor. It is much larger than a Dandelion with a diameter of about 8-10cm.

With parallel veined leaves like a monocotyledon, this highly advanced member of the daisy family can be hard to spot among the grasses until the seed heads form.

A native of western Europe, this sub-species of T pratensis called T. pratensis ssp. minor is common virtually all over Britain.
