An aerial view of Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) at Kealia Pond, Maui, Hawaii. October, 2007. The light green areas contain plants that have been burned to the ground and have new growth. The dark green areas are mature plants. The brown areas are fields where the plants have been burned and they haven't come back up yet. (Photo taken through a helicopter's window glass on a misty morning in October, 2007)

Aerial view of Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) fields in Maui. The larger brown area is a road. The smaller brown "lines" are firebreaks which help regulate the burning of the sections of the fields. (Photo taken through a helicopter's window glass in October, 2007)

An aerial view of Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) showing actively growing sugarcane, sections that have been burned with some sugacane starting to grow back and firebreaks. At the top of the photo, you can see fields burning. The smoke has caused a haze. (Photo taken through a helicopter's window glass in Maui in October, 2007)

Talk about air pollution! Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) fields being burned ... the smoke has a very distinctive odor and leaves a fine coating of dark brown-colored dust on everything. I was glad when the winds would clear it away. (Photo courtesy of Forest and Kim Starr. Hamakuapoko, Maui, Hawaii. August 02, 2002)
